SEO. Onsite optimization and Link building

Your website is now online. The next step of your online communication is to make it “visible” in the search engines to attract new potential customers.

SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and SEM for Search Engine Marketing. Both are about promoting your website in the search engines result pages.
The practical goal is to put your website in the first position on all search engines for the keywords of your activity.
The ultimate goal is of course to attract as many visitors as possible.

To illustrate the importance of being well positioned on search engines result pages, here is a graph showing the distribution of clicks on the first page of Google:

Google-CTR

Also acknowledge that the percentage of clicks on the 11th position (second page) drops to 0.7% and continues to decline for the following results.

SEO can be divided into two distinctive parts:

1. Onsite Optimization

This refers to the optimization of the structure, code and some of your website content according to a set of rules established by the search engines and based on your activity’s keywords.
This work should be done when creating the website. But it is often sloppy or completely neglected.

  • URLs optimization
  • pages titles and descriptions
  • code and HTML tags
  • content
  • etc.
  • internal links
  • linked files (robot.txt, sitemap)
  • landing pages
  • load speed

This is a one time job and the position improvement is almost immediate.
It can be completed by regular addition of content to the website.

2. Link building

Sometimes called “offsite optimization” or “netlinking”, it consists of the creation of external links pointing to your website. The links can (and should) be created on various supports: Articles, Directories, partner websites, blogs, forums etc..

The creation of these hundreds or thousands of links should be smooth and spread over time and is generally subject to a 6 months to 1 year renewable contract.
This work is the most tedious but also the most important in SEO. It will push your website on the first page and maybe even in the first position of search engines result pages.
